Picking up your puppy or having it shipped -
We welcome all of our customers to visit us and tour our facility. We are grateful to have a state-of-the-arts facility. It makes everything easier for us and our Standard Poodles which in the end plays a significant part of our producing top quality Standard Poodles for our customers. Some folks are fortunate enough to pick up their puppy here while others are not able to for various reasons and will need to have us send their puppy to them via the airlines. (Take a quick tour of our facility page if you can't pick your puppy up here. It's the next best thing to being here. ) Shipping puppies is very safe now days. We have shipped several hundred over the years and have never had a serious incident. Federal regulations on shipping live animals are very strict making it much safer than ever before. Your puppy will come to you in a new crate which is yours to keep and is large enough to start crate training in.
We would like to say a few things about what to expect when you get your puppy and give a few tips on caring for your new family member. Whether you pick your puppy up here or have us ship him/her to you, there are still a few things we would like to go over with you, such as; house-training, crate training, nutrition, health issues, etc. Let's start with what to expect when you first introduce him or her to your new home and family...
My new home
-
Remember everything is new and a totally new environment to your new little (in some cased not so little) family member and there are different reasons they may respond differently. They could have just came off of a long trip and be tired and not be so playful as well as other things that could cause them to take a little time to adapt. Many will be playful and jovial right away but be patient with them and realize that however they react the whole ordeal is still somewhat stressful to their system and usually effects their digestive system a little. It is normal for them to have loose stools (not diarrhea), which should settle down in just a few days. If this is the case we have found that Pepto Bismo tablets work great and generally one a day (two if needed, morning and nite). We recommend that you give your puppy a tablespoon of plain or non-fat vanilla yogurt morning and evening for a week or two after he/she arrives. It's good bacteria and will help the stress of the abrupt environment change their system is going through. If the condition persists please call us or your Veterinarian. Many times we can save you a Veterinarian bill with just a phone call.
House-training
-
All Smith Poodle puppies go to their new homes Doogie-Door trained. If you have a doggie door in most cases you will have a puppy already house-trained depending on the door's accessibility and you having made sure the puppy is well acclimated to it's location and accessibility. It may take a little getting them used to it but they will quickly adapt. If you don't have a doggie door then there's some adjustments for your puppy to learn. Here are some tips; first be very consistent and focused for just a few days and you will have house-training accomplished very quickly. If you're too busy to really watch and focus on getting your puppy trained then you will have more difficulty and it will take longer to house train your puppy. Always take them to the same door and out to the same spot to potty. Always take them out first thing every morning (pick up their food and water every night by 8 PM until they are fully trained). Take them out after every nap and at least every two hours if possible. Also, take them out about 15 minutes after you see or hear them eat or drink a fair amount of water and/or food. Be consistent! Some have tied a string or ribbon with a bell on the end of it on the door knob of the door they take them out and ring it with their paw each time they go out and soon they will ring the bell when they want out. It works!
Crate training -
Is something we highly recommend and your puppy will love their crate if properly acclimated to it. We recommend you use the crate your puppy was shipped in or one the size we showed you when you picked him or her up. Puppies have a tendency not to hold-it when put it too large of a crate before they are house-trained and/or crate trained. So, start off with a smaller crate that's just large enough for them to stretch out, stand up, turn around and sit up in without touching their head and have just a little room left over. Never use the crate for punishment or time-out! Never put water or food in the crate! It's just their area for rest and sleeping and it should be as positive experience as possible. We recommend you put the crate beside your bed starting the first night where they can hear, feel and smell your presence then you can move it farther and farther away little by little until you get it where you plan for it to be permanently. You can move it back and forth for night and day areas where you can be near them for naps and such. You will notice them going to their crate for rests and naps if the door is left open for them. They love their crate!
Health issues -
Your puppy will come to you fully up to date on his or her puppy shots which is given at about five, eight and eleven weeks. They will have been on a de-worming schedule and a health certificate of all vaccines and de-worming doses given will be provided for you to give to your Veterinarian. They will need their first rabies vaccine between thirteen weeks and six months of age. We recommend neutering and spaying prior to six months or as your Veterinarian states. We also recommend you start your puppy on heart worm preventative by five months of age. All Smith Poodles are clinically examined by our Veterinarian before leaving us unless an exception is made and you are made aware of it, however, we highly recommend you take your puppy to your own Veterinarian soon after they arrive! Our Veterinarian examines their ears, eyes, teeth bite, heart, lungs, lymph nodes, range of motion in all joints, overall bone structure, condition of skin, coat, general health and a fecal exam done.
Genetic testing and OFA certifying?Even though genetic testing is proving to be beneficial, there are many confusing and misleading things being put out over the internet and other writings about it. Give us a call if you would like further explanation. Just remember that purchasing your puppy from a professional experienced breeder whose producing proven bloodlines is the safest way to obtain a pet free of undesirable traits and disease.
Nutrition -
We probably couldn't stress nutrition enough. If you want a healthy pet, good quality wholesome food is essential. Always remember that you can feed the best of foods just as inexpensive as you can the cheap low grade foods. Your pet will eat less, have less waste and be healthier! We feed; Taste of the Wild dog food in the Wetlands Roasted Fowl flavor made by Diamond Dog Food Co. It is an all stages of life dog food that you don't have to change from puppy to adult or senior types and is all natural with no grains. Your puppy was weaned on it and you will be provided with a sample either taped to the shipping crate or given to you here when you receive you new puppy.
