The world is filled with a wide array of different animals. Of these millions of different animals, the human race has managed to domesticate quite a fair number of them. Among those numbers, the dog is probably one of the most well-known and the most loyal. Among dogs, the poodle is one of those breeds that most people know about and recognize immediately. From a black standard poodle to the smallest toy poodle, these dogs are famous for a variety of reasons.

Most people will look at a black standard poodle or a white toy poodle and possibly think that the dog is not much good for anything. While it is true that most poodles are pampered so much that their original purpose has sort of been forgotten, the fact of the matter is that the poodle was originally designed to be a hunting dog! Believe it or not, the poodle was originally meant to be a retriever. There is more to these pampered pooches than meets the eye, and the average poodle can do quite well in all other dog events as well, from agility, to obedience, to tracking, and even herding!

There is a bit of a debate concerning just where the poodle originally comes from. For the most part, people believe that the poodle originated in France. While it is certainly true that France did play the largest role in the different kinds of poodles that we have today, there is no evidence that suggests France was the originator of the breed. Some point to Germany as the origin, since the name poodle comes from the German word “pudel”, which is short for “pudelhund”. The word means “splashing hound” and refers to the poodle’s job as going into water to retrieve the fowl that the hunter has shot. Then, there are also those who claim the poodle actually comes from Russia or Iberia.

Whatever the case may be, today, the black standard poodle and all its cousins are generally considered to be French. Aside from the black standard poodle, there are also poodles of many other colors. Some of the more common colors include white, apricot, red, silver, brown, and even blue! There are also multi-colored poodles, but most kennel associations throughout the world do generally not accept these breeds. The poodle comes in the standard size, as well as two smaller breeds. The miniature poodle is generally considered to be a house pet for the most part, and is quite often seen.

The toy poodle is the smallest of the three, and while it has the heritage of the standard poodle, it is hardly little more than a house pet. From the standard black poodle to the toy white poodle and to all the other varieties and mixed breeds that have come from this noble animal, the poodle is probably one of the most well-known breeds of dog in the world. While they may look silly with their fancy haircuts and their prancing steps, they are still dogs at heart just looking for an excuse to go out hunting with their master.
